Comforting those in Grief

Comforting those in Grief
Comforting those who are experiencing grief will be a task that falls to most all of us at some point in our lives. It may be difficult for some and come naturally to others but I doubt that it comes painlessly to any of us.

I'm drawn to a quote by a twentieth century African-American church leader, Howard Thurman. He says,

"I know I cannot enter all you feel, nor bear with you the burden of your pain, I can but offer what my love does give---the strength of crying, the warmth of one who seeks to understand. This I do in quiet ways---that on your lonely path you may not walk alone."

In less eloquent words: just hold someone's hand and cry with them. Your presence will be the comfort.
